Newly formed production company Mythology Entertainment is ambitiously working to adapt the classic batch of children’s horror books known as the “Lewis Barnavelt Series”. The books were created by author John Bellairs; Eric Kripke (creator of “Supernatural”) will adapt the first tale for the big screen.

The first book in the Barnavelt series is titled THE HOUSE WITH A CLOCK IN ITS WALLS, originally published in 1973 with illustrations by Edward Gorey. It details what happens when orphaned Lewis Barnavelt comes to live with his Uncle Jonathan and quickly learns that both his uncle and his next-door neighbor are witches on a quest to discover the terrifying clock ticking within the walls of Jonathan’s house. Can the three of them save the world from certain destruction?

The rest of the series follows Barnevelt and his friends as they get into all manner of spooky shenanigans.

Mythology Entertainment was forged by longtime Phoenix Pictures co-president Bradley J. Fischer and screenwriters Laeta Kalogridis (SHUTTER ISLAND) and James Vanderbilt (THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN). Fischer said: “As a kid, Eric [Kripke] was inspired by Bellairs’ work and these books have stayed with him through the years…As a company, we aspire to be a haven for artists and friends who believe in the power of myth and remember that feeling we all got as kids, when the lights went down and the images came up and anything was possible.”

There were eleven books in the Barnevelt series (original author Bellairs died in 1991, and Brad Strickland took over) so obviously Mythology has a lot to work with.
