After a laundry list of rumors and fan picks for the director of THE EXPENDABLES 3, Sylvester Stallone has made his decision. He dropped multiple hints today on his Twitter feed as to the identity of the filmmaker taking on the next chapter of the action franchise that included that he is Australian, directed a movie just a couple years ago, is not very well known in the United States, and that his last movie was “more RED than BLUE”. The mystery was solved when the identity was linked to RED HILL director Patrick Hughes.

RED HILL was a 2010 thriller starring Ryan Kwanted as a cop who gets involved in s small town showdown between the civilians, cops, and an escaped criminal. The movie was released to wide acclaim, especially as the directorial debut of Hughes. Stallone drew comparisons to his own directorial career with this tweet.

Rent RED HILL. Great Movie!! 500,000 budget 20 day shoot, Amazing – ROCKY was 850,000 and 25 days , Good OMEN!!!

While many were hoping John Woo or Mel Gibson would direct, it is nice to see a unique voice jumping in with these grizzled veterans. Hughes will have his hands full directing the returning heroes from THE EXPENDABLES 2 plus the addition of Wesley Snipes to the fold. This is looking like it is going to be an interesting project to watch.

Check out the trailer for RED HILL below.
