You just gotta love Tartan Films. Not only do they champion some great Asian flicks and do one helluva job marketing them, but they also go the extra mile a/k/a – Theatrical Release, baby! Three new announcements from Tartan on that front that you’re gonna wanna mark on your calendar:
Marebito (December 9th NY/LA)
Director – Takashi Shimizu (Ju-On, The Grudge)
Starring – Shinya Tsukamoto (Tetsuo, A Snake of June)
Synopsis – A cameraman intrigued by the circumstances surrounding a gruesome suicide is drawn onto a journey beneath Tokyo in search of the spirits reportedly haunting the subways. This latest exercise in Japanese horror from the director of THE GRUDGE takes its grainy, digital video cues into Lovecraftian territory.
R-Point (January 13th Cities TBA)
Director – Su-chang Kong
Starring – Gam Woo-Sung (Spider Forest)
Synopsis –A seance designed to exorcise the curse of South Korea ‘s involvement in overseas conflict, R-POINT is a psychological horror movie with the focus firmly on the psychological. The South Korean brass freak out when they start receiving radio transmissions from a patrol that went into R-Point a long time ago and never came out. They saddle up a shell-shocked commanding officer (Gam Woo-Sung) and a ragtag unit and send them into the murky, Charlie-infested R-Point to find out what the hell is going on. Turns out: hell is exactly what’s going on.
Sympathy for Lady Vengeance (Early 2006, Cities TBA)
Director – Park Chanwook (Oldboy, Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance)
Starring – Lee Young-ae (JSA), Choi Min-Sik (Oldboy, Shiri)
Synopsis – Geum-ja (Lee Young-ae), a beautiful girl who cannot help but draw attention from all the men around her, becomes a public figure of notoriety when she is arrested and charged for the abduction and murder of a six year-old boy, at the age of only nineteen. Being so young and pretty, her horrific crime obsesses the media. They are shocked when Geum-ja confesses, and is sent to prison on a long-term sentence; But now, 13 years have passed and in that time, Geum-ja has been the most hardworking and model prisoner. “Kind-hearted” Geum-ja, however, has not been idle during her time inside. For 13 years, she has plotted revenge against her former teacher, Mr. Baek (Choi Min-sik). Now that Geum-ja is getting out of jail, she is ready to put her carefully conceived plan into action, abetted by some of her former inmates.
