You might recall that Paramount Pictures got the ball rolling on a prequel to GREASE, the classic musical starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John, last year, and that project has now taken another step forward.

Per Deadline, Paramount has tapped Brett Haley (ALL THE BRIGHT PLACES) with directing SUMMER LOVIN', which has been script by Leah McKendrick. The original 1978 film revolved around greaser Danny (Travolta) and good girl Sandy (Newton-John) as two high-school teens (who were they kidding?) who find out they're attending the same high-school following a brief summer fling. One of the many stand-out song's featured in the film was "Summer Nights," which told a he-said/she-said version of the fling which kicked off the relationship. It's said that SUMMER LOVIN' will revolve around that fling as well as what followed, but I'm sure you've already figured that out for yourself. According to Deadline, Haley's passion for the project, as well as his pitch revolving on how he could update the story for 2020 audiences, was what won him the gig.

Deadline also states that Paramount Pictures is "extremely high" on the property and sources are even saying that the film could spawn a new franchise depending on how it performs. Prepare to enter the Grease Cinematic Universe!
