We got our first clear glimpse at the new design of the Green Goblin in THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 today and we will surely be seeing a lot more in the future as the release date quickly approaches. But, with the primary villains revealed so far, the question everyone is waiting for an answer to is how will this year’s film be leading into the already announced slew of sequels and spin-offs.

In the latest issue of Entertainment Weekly, we got a direct answer that the fruits of the SINISTER SIX film are coming in THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2.

“At the tail end of this movie we set up some of the other characters that will probably end up being in the Sinister Six,” says Sony Pictures co-chairman Amy Pascal. “We’re going forward on all fronts.” (The studio hasn’t yet announced the exact makeup of its big-screen Sinister Six, but comic book fan Garfield says he personally digs Venom, Doc Ock, Vulture, and Kraven.)

Whether or not Dane DeHaan will be the Goblin we see in future films and spin-offs remains to be seen based on his fate and that of Electro in THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2, but I would think it is likely that the two of them along with Paul Giamatti‘s Rhino will be members of the team while Rhys Ifan’s Lizard could return as well. That also doesn’t even include Chris Cooper‘s Norman Osborn who will likely return in an unknown capacity.

What it comes down to is that THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2, more so than Marc Webb‘s first foray into Peter Parker’s origin, will serve as the jumping off point for Sony’s mini-Marvel universe. Whether it succeeds will rest on just how good this movie is going to be and it sounds like Sony is pretty damn confident. Hopefully fans will respond in kind.

THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 hits theaters on May 2, 2014 followed by THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 3 on June 10, 2016 and either the fourth film or one of the spin-offs on May 4th, 2018.
