The Breakfast Club 2 nearly happened, says Anthony Michael Hall

Anthony Michael Hall’s role as Tommy Doyle in Halloween Kills has put him back in the limelight in a pretty big way. While making the rounds promoting the film, Hall has participated in some interesting career retrospectives, and among the morsels he dropped during a recent interview with The Independent was the fact that The Breakfast Club 2 with director John Hughes came pretty close to happening at one point. Hall states that the last time he spoke to Hughes was back in 1987 when the director was making The Great Outdoors. He had mentioned to Hall the possibility of doing a sequel:

“It would have been all of us in our middle-age. His idea was to pick up with them in their twenties or thirties. That [idea] was on his mind, but that was the last conversation I had with him.”

Hall admits that he and Hughes were largely estranged in the years leading up to his death. Apparently, Hughes resented the fact that Hall turned down both Pretty in Pink and Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, the latter of which had been specifically crafted as a star vehicle for the actor. Hall, at the time, was busy with other projects.

“It was a sad occurrence…Because it was because of John that I was doing other projects and that I had other work lined up. I was doing Out of Bounds and trying to go in another direction. I was just a young actor wanting to grow, you know? And while I can’t confirm this, I think that was difficult for John.”

Do you think The Breakfast Club 2 would’ve been a good idea? If you’re a John Hughes fan, make sure to check out a show we’ve been doing over at JoBlo Videos, John Hughes Revisited. In it, we take a deep dive into the writer/director’s legacy. Check out the first three episodes below!
