Author Nick Cutter’s novel The Deep was released back in 2015 (you can pick up a copy HERE), and genre legends Clive Barker and Stephen King were among the readers who were shaken by the story. Barker said the book is “utterly terrifying”. King said The Deep “scared the hell out of me and I couldn’t put it down”, adding that the book was “old-school horror at its best”. Now Deadline reports that a series adaptation of the novel is in the works at Amazon Studios, with C. Henry Chaisson – whose credits include co-writing the screenplay for the horror film Antlers and writing a couple episodes of the M. Night Shyamalan-produced thriller series Servant – on board to write and executive produce.

Described as “The Abyss meets The Shining“, The Deep tells the following story: A strange plague called the ’Gets is decimating humanity on a global scale. It causes people to forget – small things at first, like where they left their keys… then the not-so-small things like how to drive, or the letters of the alphabet. Then their bodies forget how to function involuntarily… and there is no cure. But now, far below the surface of the Pacific Ocean, deep in the Mariana Trench, an heretofore unknown substance hailed as “ambrosia”’ – a universal healer, from initial reports – has been discovered. It may just be the key to eradicating the ’Gets. In order to study this phenomenon, a special research lab, the Trieste, has been built eight miles under the sea’s surface. But when the station goes incommunicado, a brave few descend through the lightless fathoms in hopes of unraveling the mysteries lurking at those crushing depths… and perhaps to encounter an evil blacker than anything one could possibly imagine.

In addition to Chaisson, executive producers of the series adaptation of Cutter’s novel will include Carlton Cuse of Genre Arts, plus Henrik Bastin and Melissa Aouate of Fabel Entertainment. Cuse co-created Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan for Amazon, while Bastin and Aouate are executive producers on the Amazon series Bosch.

Here’s hoping that the series version of The Deep will be just as unnerving as the source material that scared Clive Barker and Stephen King. Have you read Cutter’s novel? If so, let us know what you thought of it by leaving a comment below.
