So, according to Variety, Ari Sandel (THE DUFF, the upcoming MONSTER HIGH film) will be directing the sequel to GOOSEBUMPS.
It was assumed original director Rob Letterman would reprise his role for GOOSEBUMPS 2, but he is currently working on DETECTIVE PIKACHU starring Ryan Reynolds.
It is also unclear if star Jack Black will even reprise his role in the sequel. There are apparently scheduling concerns, and because of that Sony has commissioned two scripts simultaneously: one that stars Black, the other that does not. It is unclear which version they are currently going with.
Now, I grew up with GOOSEBUMPS, and loved the books (or at least the covers – I collected more books than I actually read). And I was pleasantly surprised with how good the first film was! It was funny, had heart, and a clear love for the source material. However, even if I ultimately found Black’s R.L. Stine to be serviceable, I also thought he was the weakest link, so while I’d prefer him to come back, I won’t outright dismiss the sequel if he doesn’t.
