The Final Girl Support Group: Andy Muschietti directing pilot for HBO Max

Last Updated on July 30, 2021

Last November, we heard that Adam Goldworm of Aperture Entertainment would be executive producing, alongside Annapurna, a television series based on author Grady Hendrix’s novel The Final Girl Support Group, which wasn’t even published until this month (and you can pick up a copy HERE). Now that the book is out, more details on the series have been revealed. Annapurna doesn’t seem to be involved any longer, but Aperture Entertainment is still working on it and the series is in development at HBO Max. The creative team behind the show also includes Charlize Theron’s production company Denver & Delilah Films, and Double Dream, the company run by It director Andy Muschietti and his producing partner / sister Barbara Muschietti. Andy Muschietti will be directing the pilot episode as well.

The Final Girl Support Group has the following description:

In horror movies, the final girls are the ones left standing when the credits roll. They made it through the worst night of their lives… but what happens after?

Like his best-selling novel The Southern Book Club’s Guide to Slaying Vampires, Grady Hendrix’s latest is a fast-paced, frightening, and wickedly humorous thriller. From chainsaws to summer camp slayers, The Final Girl Support Group pays tribute to and slyly subverts our most popular horror films – movies like The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, A Nightmare on Elm Street, and Scream.

Lynette Tarkington is a real-life final girl who survived a massacre. For more than a decade, she’s been meeting with five other final girls and their therapist in a support group for those who survived the unthinkable, working to put their lives back together. Then one woman misses a meeting, and their worst fears are realized – someone knows about the group and is determined to rip their lives apart again, piece by piece.

But the thing about final girls is that no matter how bad the odds, how dark the night, how sharp the knife, they will never, ever give up.

Hendrix, Goldworm, Theron, and the Muschiettis will be executive producing the series adaptation with AJ Dix, Beth Kono, and Andrew Haas of Denver & Delilah, and Irene Yeung of Double Dream.

When Annapurna was still involved, Elizabeth Craft and Sarah Fain, co-creators of ABC’s legal drama series The Fix, were writing the pilot script. It’s not clear if Craft and Fain are still writing the show now that HBO Max and the other production companies are on board.

The audiobook version of The Final Girl Support Group was narrated by Friday the 13th heroine Adrienne King, and you can buy that at THIS LINK. In addition to his novels, Hendrix has also written the screenplays for Satanic Panic (watch it HERE) and Mohawk (watch that one HERE).
