The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo sequel to spin its web in October 2018

Last Updated on July 31, 2021

Wow! According to BoxOfficeMojo, David Fincher's THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO (2011) managed to snare a worldwide total of $232.6 million in ticket sales before exiting theaters. No wonder Sony is looking to spin another web of money and entertainment out of the planned release of THE GIRL IN THE SPIDER'S WEB, a sequel based off of the crime drama from late-writer Stieg Larsson's best-selling Millennium book series. According to some reports, actresses Natalie Portman and Scarlett Johansson are among the names being considered for the role of Lisbeth.

DON'T BREATHE director Fede Alvarez has signed on to helm the project, which is set to begin its principal photography in September of this year with a theatrical release date scheduled for October 5, 2018. It's being reported that the movie will feature an entirely new cast, which includes the role of Lisbeth Salander, initially portrayed by actress Noomi Repace in the original Swedish trilogy and Rooney Mara in Fincher's version. Steven Knight, Fede Alvarez and Jay Basu will pen a script for the upcoming film based on the fourth book in the Millennium series that was written by David Lagercrantz after Stieg Larson's passing in November of 2014.

With Scott Rudin, Søren Stærmose, Ole Søndberg, Amy Pascal, Elizabeth Cantillon, Eli Bush, and Berna Levin producing the project, and Anni Faurbye Fernandez, Line Winther Skyum Funch, Johannes Jensen and Fincher set to executively produce, the hunt is officially on for Alvarez to find and secure his leading lady for bit of mystery, violence, and intrigue. One would think that we'll be hearing more about the return of Lisbeth Salander and Mikael Blomkvist in the coming months.

THE GIRL IN THE SPIDER'S WEB is set to spin a tangled web indeed on October 5, 2018.
