The Green Knight: A24 fantasy film set for summer 2021 theatrical release

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

Once set to reach theatres on May 29, 2020, writer/director David Lowery's fantasy adventure film The Green Knight was removed from the release schedule (and missed out on making its world premiere at the SXSW festival) when the pandemic hit. Distributor A24 has been waiting months to give the film a new release date – and now they have chosen one. Sticking with the plan to get The Green Knight into theatres, A24 has announced that they intend to send the film to the big screen on July 30, 2021. Fourteen months later than they originally expected.

Starring Dev Patel, Joel Edgerton, Barry Keoghan, Ralph Ineson, and Alicia Vikander, with Sean Harris as King Arthur, The Green Knight has the following synopsis:

An epic fantasy adventure based on the timeless Arthurian legend, The Green Knight tells the story of Sir Gawain (Dev Patel), King Arthur’s reckless and headstrong nephew, who embarks on a daring quest to confront the eponymous Green Knight, a gigantic emerald-skinned stranger and tester of men. Gawain contends with ghosts, giants, thieves, and schemers in what becomes a deeper journey to define his character and prove his worth in the eyes of his family and kingdom by facing the ultimate challenger.

The film is rated R for "violence, some sexuality, and graphic nudity".

The Green Knight looks pretty cool to me. I don't know if I'll go to a theatre to see it next July, but it's definitely on my "to watch someday" list.
