The Hitcher: Second Sight confirms full restoration for 4K and Blu-ray release

Last Updated on January 5, 2022

Last year, we heard that the 1986 classic The Hitcher (watch it HERE) would be getting a Blu-ray release courtesy of Second Sight Films, with the company working from “the existing master taken from a print which is in the best condition we have seen”… a master that had “several issues” for Second Sight to deal with to get it into Blu-ray condition. But now Second Sight has announced some great news: they have tracked down original camera negative, which will allow them to do a full restoration – and a 4K release!

Directed by Robert Harmon from a screenplay by Eric Red, The Hitcher has the following synopsis:

While transporting a car from Chicago to San Diego, Jim Halsey picks up a hitchhiker named John Ryder, who claims to be a serial killer. After a daring escape, Jim hopes to never see Ryder again. But when he witnesses the hitchhiker murdering an entire family, Jim pursues Ryder with the help of truck-stop waitress Nash, pitting the rivals against each other in a deadly series of car chases and brutal murders.

The film stars C. Thomas Howell, Jennifer Jason Leigh, and Jeffrey DeMunn, with the late, great Rutger Hauer delivering one of his best performances as the title character.

The Hitcher is awesome, one of my all-time favorite horror thrillers, so it’s very cool to hear that Second Sight is going to have the opportunity to restore it and make it look better than ever for their upcoming release. A release date for Second Sight’s 4K and Blu-ray hasn’t been revealed yet, but we’ll let you know when they announce their plans.

Are you a fan of The Hitcher, and will you be picking up a copy of the Second Sight Blu-ray release when it comes out? Let us know by leaving a comment below.
