The Last of Us HBO series adds Jeffrey Pierce, the game’s Tommy voice actor

Last Updated on July 30, 2021

An HBO series adaptation of the popular video game The Last of Us is currently in production, and two of the game's voice performers also have roles on the show. We learned a while back that Merle Dandridge will be bringing her game character Marlene to life on the screen as well, and now Jeffrey Pierce – who provided the voice of Tommy in the game – has also signed on for a role. Gabriel Luna was already cast as the show's Tommy, so Pierce will be playing Perry, "a rebel in a quarantine zone".

Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey lead the cast of The Last of Us, which takes place

twenty years after modern civilization has been destroyed. Joel (Pascal), a hardened survivor, is hired to smuggle Ellie (Bella Ramsey), a 14-year-old girl, out of an oppressive quarantine zone. What starts as a small job soon becomes a brutal, heartbreaking journey, as they both must traverse across the U.S. and depend on each other for survival.

Pascal's Joel is "tormented by past trauma and failure. He must trek across a pandemic-ravaged America, all the while protecting a girl who represents the last hope of humanity." Ramsey's Ellie is "a 14-year-old orphan who has never known anything but a ravaged planet and who struggles to balance her instinct for anger and defiance with her need for connection and belonging… as well as the newfound reality that she may be the key to saving the world." Luna's Tommy is "a former soldier who hasn't lost his sense of idealism and hope for a better world." Dandridge's Marlene is "the head of the Fireflies, a resistance movement struggling for freedom against an oppressive military regime." Nico Parker is also in there as Joel's daughter Sarah.

Pierce's fellow new additions to the cast are Con O'Neill (Chernobyl) and Murray Bartlett (Guiding Light). They're playing Bill and Frank, "two post-pandemic survivalists living alone in their own isolated town."

The series is a co-production with Sony Pictures Television, PlayStation Productions, Word Games, The Mighty Mint, and game developer Naughty Dog. The video game's creative director Neil Druckmann serves as executive producer alongside Carolyn Strauss, Naughty Dog's Evan Wells, Asad Qizilbash and Carter Swan of PlayStation Productions, and the show's writer Craig Mazin.

The Last of Us episodes are being directed by Kantemir Balagov (Beanpole), Jasmila Zbanic (Quo vadis, Aida), and Ali Abbasi (Border).
