The Late Show with Stephen Colbert to be replaced with… Comics Unleashed

The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, replacedThe Late Show with Stephen Colbert, replaced

Last year, CBS announced that The Late Show with Stephen Colbert was cancelled due to financial concerns, and now its replacement has been revealed. The finale of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert will air on May 22, and the very next day, the network will fill the hour with Comics Unleashed with Bryon Allen.

Comic Unleashed

The show is hosted by Byron Allen and features a rotating panel of comedians. Comics Unleashed previously aired after The Late Show in the 12:35 am slot, which will now be filled by Funny You Should Ask, a syndicated game show created by Allen and hosted by Jon Kelley.

I created and launched ‘Comics Unleashed’ 20 years ago so my fellow comedians could have a platform to do what we all love — make people laugh,” Allen said in a statement. “I truly appreciate CBS’ confidence in me by picking up our two-hour comedy block of ‘Comics Unleashed’ and ‘Funny You Should Ask,’ because the world can never have enough laughter.

Next Up for Stephen Colbert… Middle-Earth

Once Colbert bids farewell to The Late Show, his next project will be quite different. It was announced last month that he will write the next Lord of the Rings movie alongside Philippa Boyens and Peter McGee.

With the working title of Lord of the Rings: Shadow of the Past, the film’s logline reads: “Fourteen years after the passing of Frodo – Sam, Merry, and Pippin set out to retrace the first steps of their adventure. Meanwhile, Sam’s daughter, Elanor, has discovered a long-buried secret and is determined to uncover why the War of the Ring was very nearly lost before it even began.

In a video announcement, Colbert told Peter Jackson, “You know what the books mean to me, and what your films mean to me. But the thing I found myself reading over and over again were the six chapters early on in [The Fellowship of the Ring] that ya’ll never developed into the first movie back in the day. It’s basically the chapter ‘Three Is Company’ [Chapter III] through ‘Fog on the Barrow-Downs’ [Chapter VIII]. And I thought, ‘Oh, wait, maybe that could be its own story that could fit into the larger story. Could we make something that was completely faithful to the books while also being completely faithful to the movies that you guys had already made?’
