The Lego Movie sequel gets a new director; may be Ninjago focused

THE LEGO MOVIE has grossed $366 million worldwide, making it the most successful film of 2014 so far (which will likely change when a certain red, white, and blue “Avenger” debuts next month) and a lot of that is thanks to the work of writer/director duo Phil Lord and Chris Miller. However, it seems the two will not be returning for the sequel. Warner Bros. has now set Chris McKay, the animation co-director on the first film, to helm the sequel, which is planned for a 2017 release.

The kicker to this, according to Deadline, is that the sequel details are still being worked out, as they aren’t sure “whether this is a straight sequel or a film that broadens the LEGO empire by focusing on the character Ninjago.” There was talk of doing a Ninjago film earlier , but it appears they’re still unsure if which direction to go in the follow up for the big-screen Lego universe. Either way, based on the box office performance of the first film, it’s sure to wrangle in some cash.

Personally, I loved THE LEGO MOVIE, but out of Phil Lord and Chris Miller‘s hands I’m a little leery of a sequel. It’s a similar circumstance as CLOUDY WITH A CHANCE OF MEATBALLS, which the duo directed, but had no part in the rather ho-hum sequel. That’s not to say that anyone but Lord/Miller could deliver a good sequel, but when you’re talking about reliability, I’d feel much more comfortable with them steering the ship.

THE LEGO MOVIE sequel (or NINJAGO…whatever they go with) is set to hit theaters on May 26, 2017.
