Jon M. Chu’s MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE reboot has gotten another push in the right direction with the hiring of a screenwriter to update the previous draft, titled GREYSKULL. The man hired for the writing duties is none other than Terry Rossio. Okay, maybe this isn’t a nudge in the right direction rather than a direction. Rossio is best known for writing all of the PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN movies as well as the Antonio Banderas ZORRO movies. Those were all written with partner Ted Elliott.

MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE has been developing for years and received a major push after the success of both TRANSFORMERS and G.I. JOE at the box office. A big screen He-Man hasn’t been seen since the cult classic starring Dolph Lundgren and Frank Langella. This newest version has had ups and downs but no real progress. When Chu’s G.I. JOE: RETALIATION did surprisingly well at the box office, Columbia ramped up their efforts.

I loved MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE as a kid and while the movie didn’t keep the original story in mind, I still had a lot of fun with it. The make-up effects on Skeletor were fantastic even if the entire movie played like a cheap STAR WARS rip-off. I don’t think Chu is quite the director to bring us the He-man we have been waiting for, but I was willing to give him a chance. Now, it appears he is off the movie entirely without any explanation. This gives me hope that they will bring someone in who has the vision and scope to truly make a kick-ass MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE movie. My only requirement: keep the movie on Eternia!
