The Lovebirds find new home at Netflix in latest trailer

Last Updated on July 30, 2021

THE LOVEBIRDS, starring Kumail Nanjiani and Issa Rae, was originally set to hit screens on April 3, 2020 but was one of several films taken off the release calendar due to the COVID-19 pandemic. At the time fo the delay, the film wasn't given a new date but it was eventually revealed that the film would be headed to Netflix rather than getting a theatrical run. We now have a premiere date for the offbeat romantic comedy and a new trailer that announces its imminent arrival on Netflix.

THE LOVEBIRDS will premiere on Netflix on May 22, 2020. The trailer is almost beat for beat of the trailer that I had personally seen ahead of many films before theaters began to close nationwide. The comedy features Nanjiani & Rae as Jibran and Leilani, a couple that experiences a defining moment in their relationship when they are unintentionally embroiled in a murder mystery. The film also stars Kyle Bornheimer, Anna Camp & Paul Sparks.

Kumail Nanjiani and Issa Rae also celebrated the premiere announcement with a video that was shared on Rae's Twitter page with the caption "Very excited to say that my movie with Issa Rae, The Lovebirds (directed by Michael Showalter) is going to be on Netflix on May 22nd! Can't wait for you to see it!" You can check out the video on Twitter below:

This seems like the best release scenario for THE LOVEBIRDS. The trailer is decent enough and it looks like a fun way to to spend a couple of hours but I'm not sure what its box office potential would've been. A Netflix release likely opens the film o a much wider audience, especially as we all quaranine at home.

Will YOU be checking out THE LOVEBIRDS? The film hits streaming on May 22, 2020.
