The Matrix 4: Jonathan Groff’s role teased in new image & running time revealed

Jonathan Groff matrix 4

So who exactly is Jonathan Groff playing in The Matrix Resurrections? The trailers show him briefly but given how hyped his role has been in the press lead-up to the film, there’s more to his role than meets the eye, right? Indeed, EW has just released an all-new image from the film which shows him fighting Keanu Reeves’ Neo, making it pretty apparent that he’s playing an Agent of some kind (perhaps even Agent Smith rebooted?)

Groff himself had high praise for Keanu as a co-star, telling EW that “[Keanu] taught me so much about the agreement of two people to hit each other, but not hurt each other.” Best known for his role on Broadway as King George III in Hamilton and Netflix’s indefinitely postponed Mindhunter (please God, let Netflix bring this show back), Groff is new to action films and obviously couldn’t ask for a better mentor than Reeves. “When our fight was over, I felt deeply connected to him in a physical way,” he added to EW. Yahya Abdul-Mateen II also gave Reeves high marks, praising him for “pushing us and setting the standard.”

The same article elaborated on Jessica Henwick’s character, Bugs, who she says is the audience’s eyes. Apparently, Henwick was also up for a role in Shang-Chi at the same time she auditioned to play Bugs and was forced to choose which film she could audition for – something she calls an actual “red pill/ blue pill” moment.

In addition, The Matrix Resurrection’s running time has been confirmed on various sites as 148 minutes, which is a shade longer than any of the movies in the original trilogy, and promises that the film is the epic fans are expecting.
