For the first time, The Matrix is coming to IMAX for a special two-night screening. The Matrix became a worldwide phenomenon and launched star Keanu Reeves further into the cultural stratosphere – but only its sequels have been shown in IMAX, with 2003’s The Matrix: Reloaded being the first Warner Bros. Pictures title ever to undergo the IMAX Digital Remastering (DMR) process for its screens. The Matrix IMAX screenings are happening on Tuesday, December 7, and Wednesday, December 8, in select cinemas across the United States. This special run comes just two weeks before the highly anticipated The Matrix: Resurrections is uploaded to IMAX screens all over the globe on December 22.

“With excitement building around The Matrix Resurrections, this is the perfect time to experience the film that started it all in a way it’s never been seen before,” said Megan Colligan, President of IMAX Entertainment. The Matrix forever changed the visual language of epic filmmaking and we’re very excited for fans everywhere to be able to enjoy this groundbreaking film for the first time in IMAX.”

The Matrix kicked off a truly singular film franchise that has continued to entertain audiences and influence the industry since 1999,” stated Jeff Goldstein, President, Warner Bros. Pictures Domestic Distribution. “We’re thrilled to partner with IMAX on another first for the fans who’ve waited more than 20 years to see THE MATRIX in this format, and for moviegoers who will discover this incredible ongoing story for the first time, just in time for THE MATRIX RESURRECTIONS to hit theaters for the holidays.”

Here’s the official synopsis for The Matrix:

Neo (Keanu Reeves) believes that Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne), an elusive figure considered to be the most dangerous man alive, can answer his question — What is the Matrix? Neo is contacted by Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss), a beautiful stranger who leads him into an underworld where he meets Morpheus. They fight a brutal battle for their lives against a cadre of viciously intelligent secret agents. It is a truth that could cost Neo something more precious than his life.

Here’s the official synopsis for The Matrix Resurrections:

In a world of two realities—everyday life and what lies behind it—Thomas Anderson will have to choose to follow the white rabbit once more. Choice, while an illusion, is still the only way in or out of the Matrix, which is stronger, more secure, and more dangerous than ever before.
