The Matrix Resurrections is nearly upon us. The film has been billed as the next chapter of The Matrix franchise, and while fans across the globe are excited to be returning to the world of The Matrix once again, some can’t help but wonder if we’ll be seeing more of Neo (Keanu Reeves) and Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss). While on the red carpet for the San Francisco premiere of The Matrix Resurrections, director and co-writer Lana Wachowski set the record straight on whether or not the film is the first part of a new trilogy.

When asked if The Matrix Resurrections would launch a new trilogy, Lana Wachowski motioned over to the producers of the film and simply said, “My producers are over there. No.

As we’ve learned again and again in this business, the unexpected happens more often than not. While Lana Wachowski says that The Matrix Resurrections won’t kick off a new trilogy, it’s not outside the realm of possibility should the film proves to be a success; after all, I doubt many of us were expecting that another Matrix movie would happen in the first place. Not every film needs to plant seeds for sequels. If The Matrix Resurrections really is a coda for the franchise, that would be just fine in my book.

The official synopsis for The Matrix Resurrections:

In “The Matrix Resurrections,” return to a world of two realities: one, everyday life; the other, what lies behind it. To find out if his reality is a physical or mental construct, to truly know himself, Mr. Anderson will have to choose to follow the white rabbit once more. And if Thomas…Neo…has learned anything, it’s that choice, while an illusion, is still the only way out of—or into— the Matrix. Of course, Neo already knows what he has to do. But what he doesn’t yet know is the Matrix is stronger, more secure and more dangerous than ever before. Déjà vu.

In addition to Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss, The Matrix Resurrections also stars Yahya Abdul Mateen-II, Jessica Henwick, Jonathan Groff, Neil Patrick Harris, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Christina Ricci, Telma Hopkins, Eréndira Ibarra, Tony Onwumere, Max Riemelt, Brian J. Smith, and Jada Pinkett Smith. The Matrix Resurrections will debut in theaters and on HBO Max tomorrow, so be sure to check out a review from our own JimmyO!
