The Matrix Resurrections isn’t just another sequel

The Matrix Resurrections, sequel

It’s hard to tell exactly what to expect from The Matrix Resurrections. Arriving eighteen years after the release of The Matrix Revolutions, the sequel brings back Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss as Neo and Trinity, two characters who didn’t survive the events of the last film, but when it comes to The Matrix… anything is possible. While speaking with To Vima (via Showbiz Cheatsheet), The Matrix Resurrections co-writer David Mitchell teased that the film definitely isn’t just another sequel.

I saw the film in Berlin in September,” David Mitchell said. “It’s really good. I cannot tell you what this film is about, but I could explain what it is not. It’s certainly not yet one more sequel, but something autonomous that contains however the three Matrix that preceded in a really ingenious way. It’s a very beautiful and weird creation. It also achieves a couple of things that we do not see in action films, meaning it subverts the rules of blockbusters.

The Matrix Resurrections may serve as a sequel to the original Matrix trilogy, but it also appears to be something new. It’s hard to surprise audiences nowadays, but I hope that The Matrix Resurrections is able to pull it off. A handful of new character posters for the film were released earlier today, and it was also announced that the original film would be released in select IMAX cinemas on December 8th and 9th. “With excitement building around The Matrix Resurrections, this is the perfect time to experience the film that started it all in a way it’s never been seen before,” said Megan Colligan, President of IMAX Entertainment. “The Matrix forever changed the visual language of epic filmmaking and we’re very excited for fans everywhere to be able to enjoy this groundbreaking film for the first time in IMAX.

In addition to Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss, The Matrix Resurrections also stars Yahya Abdul Mateen-II, Jessica Henwick, Jonathan Groff, Neil Patrick Harris, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Christina Ricci, Telma Hopkins, Eréndira Ibarra, Tony Onwumere, Max Riemelt, Brian J. Smith, and Jada Pinkett Smith. The Matrix: Resurrections will hit theaters on December 22, 2021 and will also be available to stream on HBO Max.
