The Meg 2 may pull from Steve Alten’s other Meg novels

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

The giant shark flick THE MEG hit last summer and was a good bit of fun. Producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura recently said that they are still working on the script for THE MEG 2 and today we have word that the next installment might pull from some of author Steve Alten's other MEG books – if only "a little bit." Specifically, producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura recently said in an interview.

I think [The Meg 2] will pull from Alten's other books] a little bit and I'm going to reserve comment because until I read [the script], I don't want to send people off in the wrong direction.

Alten's other THE MEG novels which the sequel could pull bits and pieces from include Meg: Origins, The Trench, Meg: Primal Waters, Meg: Hell's Aquarium, Meg: Nightstalkers, Meg: Generations, and the upcoming Meg: Purgatory. Meanwhile, for those who need to know more about the film other than "Statham kicks the huge-gantic ass off of a prehistoric shark for 90 mins", the first film's official synopsis goes like this:

A deep-sea submersible—part of an international undersea observation program—has been attacked by a massive creature and now lies disabled at the bottom of the deepest part of the Pacific Ocean…with its crew trapped inside. With time running out, former deep-sea rescue diver Jonas Taylor (Jason Statham) is drawn out of self-imposed exile by a visionary Chinese oceanographer, Dr. Zhang (Winston Chao), against the wishes of his daughter, Suyin (Li Bingbing), who thinks she can rescue the crew on her own. But it will take their combined efforts to save the crew, and the ocean itself, from this seemingly unstoppable threat—a prehistoric 75-foot-long shark known as the Megalodon. Thought to be extinct, the Meg turns out to be very much alive…and on the hunt. Five years before, Jonas had encountered this same terrifying creature, but no one had believed him. Now, teamed with Suyin, Jonas must confront his fears and risk his own life to return to the ocean depths…bringing him face-to-face once more with the apex predator of all time.

Turteltaub directed the film from a screenplay by Dean Georgaris and Jon and Erich Hoeber, based on the best-selling novel by Steve Alten. THE MEG starred Jason Statham, Li Bingbing, Rainn Wilson, Ruby Rose, Winston Chao, Page Kennedy, Jessica McNamee, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson, Robert Taylor, Sophia Cai, Masi Oka, and Cliff Curtis. Lorenzo di Bonaventura, Belle Avery, and Colin Wilson produced the film, with Gerald R. Molen, Wei Jang, Randy Greenberg, Catherine Xujun Ying, Chantal Nong and Barrie M. Osborne serving as executive producers. Snag a copy on Blu-ray HERE.

That title is just silly.
