The Mosquito Coast trailer showcases Justin Theroux leading Apple TV+ remake

Last Updated on August 5, 2021

The first trailer for Apple TV+'s The Mosquito Coast has arrived, and things are about to get very intense. Based on the book of the same name by Theroux's uncle, Paul Theroux, Apple's new version follows the dangerous journey of a radical idealist and brilliant inventor, Allie Fox (Theroux), who uproots his family for Mexico when they suddenly find themselves on the run from the U.S. government. Along with Melissa George, the series stars Logan Polish and Gabriel Bateman.

Do you remember the 1986 Peter Weir film The Mosquito Coast starring Harrison Ford, Helen Mirren, and River Phoenix? You are such a liar! Odds are unless you are a die-hard cinephile or bibliophile, the title of this new series doesn't register much with you. But, if you have heard of it before, chances are it was because you checked out the film. After all, Indiana Jones was on the poster only to find out it was actually a character drama and not an action flick.

The first two episodes of The Mosquito Coast will debut on April 30 followed by new episodes each Friday, exclusively on Apple TV+. The seven-episode series is executive produced by creator Neil Cross alongside Rupert Wyatt, who also directs the first two episodes. Additionally, Paul Theroux, Justin Theroux, and Edward L. McDonnell. Bob Bookman, Alan Gasmer, and Peter Jaysen also serve as executive producers through the Veritas Entertainment Group.

“I have a long history with the novel in that I read it as a kid,” said Theroux, “and this was one of those happy accidents where the stars aligned for me to do it.”

“This is Allie seen through a different prism,” explained Theroux about why the project appealed to him and how it serves as a prequel to Weir's film, "you’ll see the evolution of this character in subsequent episodes. I responded to the few initial scripts.”

I've made a lot of bad choices throughout my life, but none that have ever had the cops monitoring my every move. I can't imagine what life on the run would be like, but I have got a feeling that The Mosquito Coast is about to give us all an education in that subject.
