About two years have gone by since Conjuring Universe producer Peter Safran said they had a “really fun storyline” in mind for a sequel to The Nun (which you can get HERE) and screenwriter Akela Cooper was hired to write out that storyline. We haven’t heard much about The Nun 2 since then, while the Conjuring Universe has continued to expand with Annabelle Comes Home, The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, and the Annabelle-adjacent movie The Curse of La Llorona. But during a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, The Nun star Taissa Farmiga mentioned that there’s some indication The Nun 2 might be starting to move forward.

Farmiga said,

There have definitely been whisperings and talks (about The Nun 2) in the last year, but the pandemic has obviously affected everything including filming and such. So I heard mentions of it back in the fall, maybe, and there were talks of potentially trying to see what my availability was. But I also haven’t seen a script. So I haven’t heard anything definitive or anyone say, “Hey, this is going.” So I don’t know, but I would love to go back and visit Sister Irene. It’s been years.”

Directed by Corin Hardy from a screenplay by Gary Dauberman, The Nun told the following story:

When a young nun at a cloistered abbey in Romania takes her own life, a priest with a haunted past and a novitiate on the threshold of her final vows are sent by the Vatican to investigate.  Together they uncover the order’s unholy secret.  Risking not only their lives but their faith and their very souls, they confront a malevolent force in the form of the same demonic nun that first terrorized audiences in “The Conjuring 2,” as the abbey becomes a horrific battleground between the living and the damned.

Farmiga was joined in the cast by Demian Bichir, Jonas Bloquet, Charlotte Hope, and Ingrid Bisu, with Bonnie Aarons as the titular demonic entity that was introduced in The Conjuring 2.

Akela Cooper’s previous writing credits include Grimm, The 100, American Horror Story, Luke Cage, and Hell Fest. In addition to The Nun 2, she has collaborated with Conjuring Universe producer James Wan on Malignant and the upcoming film M3GAN.

I didn’t like The Nun very much, but I’d still watch a sequel if they make one.
