The Old Guard 2: Charlize Theron says Netflix sequel will film next year

Last Updated on July 30, 2021

While we wait to see what that immortal Highlander is going to get up to in the remake Chad Stahelski will be directing with Henry Cavill in the lead, Netflix is moving forward with its own franchise about immortal action heroes, The Old Guard. Almost exactly one year has passed since the first movie in the Old Guard series was released through the Netflix streaming service, and now star Charlize Theron has confirmed that The Old Guard 2 will be happening soon.

Speaking with Variety, Theron said

the script is done for the sequel to “The Old Guard,” her Netflix film adaptation of the graphic novel of the same name. Cameras will start rolling in the first quarter of 2022.

So sometime within the next nine months, Theron will be on the set of The Old Guard 2, reprising the role of Andromache of Scythia, a.k.a. Andy. She told Variety that Marwan Kenzari and Luca Marinelli will definitely be in there as their characters Joe and Nicky, and it's probably safe to assume that Matthias Schoenaerts and Kiki Layne will be reprising the roles of Booker and Nile as well. It seems likely we'll see Chiwetel Ejiofor as non-immortal Copley as well.

The character I'm most looking forward to seeing is Van Veronica Ngo's mysterious immortal Quynh, who recently resurfaced after spending centuries trapped at the bottom of the sea, drowning over and over again.

Directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood from a screenplay by Greg Rucka, who also created (with artist Leandro Fernandez) the graphic novel series the film was based on, The Old Guard introduced viewers to

a covert group of tight-knit mercenaries with a mysterious inability to die who have fought to protect the mortal world for centuries. When the team is recruited to take on an emergency mission and their extraordinary abilities are suddenly exposed, it’s up to Andy and Nile, the newest soldier to join their ranks, to help the group eliminate the threat of those who seek to replicate and monetize their power by any means necessary.

I thought The Old Guard was an entertaining movie, and was left wanting to see more of these characters. I'm glad to hear The Old Guard 2 is moving forward quickly.
