After decades of Stephen King and his fans wondering if a cinematic adaptation of his THE DARK TOWER series would ever be made, and after years of attempts to get an adaptation off the ground, it has finally happened. A movie based on the concepts presented in the series has been made, it's shot and has been in the can since late July. Now it just needs a little more time in post-production than the studio and production company behind it had anticipated.
Sony Pictures and MRC are informing theatre owners that the release of THE DARK TOWER is being pushed back from its February 17, 2017 release date to an unspecified date sometime in the summer of 2017. The reason for this delay are the visual effects – with deadlines quickly approaching, the choice was between adding millions to the $60 million budget to get the effects done quicker, or delay the release and extend deadlines. They have gone with the more cost efficient option, which will also give them more time to build up the marketing of the film.
Directed by Nikolaj Arcel from a screenplay he wrote with Anders Thomas Jensen, Akiva Goldsman, and Jeff Pinkner, THE DARK TOWER is actually said to function as a sequel of sorts to the book series.
THE DARK TOWER will follow a wandering knight who is the last hope of the fallen land of Mid-World. He is charged with finding the Dark Tower while battling his nemesis the Man in Black.
Idris Elba stars as heroic gunslinger Roland Deschain, with Matthew McConaughey as his nemesis the Man in the Black. They are joined in the cast by Tom Taylor as Jake Chambers, a young boy who has "The Shine"; Fran Kranz as the Man in Black's right hand man Pimli; Jackie Earle Haley as vampire leader Sayre; Katheryn Winnick in a mystery role; and Abbey Lee as Tirana, who was a minor villain in the final book.
