The Ring & Paranormal producers to remake 1978 killer-bee movie The Swarm?

Now, if done right…here’s a flick that could be all kinds of fun!

Taking a page right out of those hilarious man-vs.-nature B-movies of the ’70s (HISSSSSS, PIRANHA, THE FROGS, etc.), The Wrap reports producers Roy Lee (THE RING) and Steven Schneider (PARANORMAL ACTIVITY) are uniting to retread Irwin Allen’s 1978 killer-bee movie THE SWARM. Wonder if Michael Caine will be brought back for a cameo (doubt it, he’s long since disowned his starring role in the original).

Ash Bolland, an award winning director of commercials, is currently onboard to direct THE SWARM. Word is a screenwriter will be hired in the next month or so. No word if the script will incorporate Arthur Herzog’s novel, on which Allen’s 1978 version was based…or if a new script will be hashed out altogether.

For those in the know not, THE SWARM (1978) centers on a huge swarm of deadly African bees that spreads terror over American cities by killing thousands of people. Michael Caine plays an entomologist tasked with confronting the situation and making sure the deadly bee epidemic doesn’t reach the city of Houston.

Alright, so how do we dig this development? Is THE SWARM the kind of cheesy B-level disaster movie we wanna see, a la PIRANHA 3D, or is something like 2012 more desirable? I for one love the idea of a killer bee-movie, though I don’t know how’d you’d get around rampant CGI. And 3D…c’mon…you know this sucker’s going 3D if it can secure a budget.

What ya got on the matter?
