The third season of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is set to be released on Prime Video later this year, but THR reports that pre-production on season 4 is already gearing up, despite the show not being officially greenlit.
The Rings of Power
The report states the show is looking to kick off pre-production this fall, with shooting beginning in early 2027. As I mentioned, the fourth season hasn’t been officially greenlit, but Amazon MGM Studios appears to be moving forward with the five-season plan they announced close to a decade ago.
Amazon says the series has attracted over 185 million viewers worldwide and continues to be “one of the highest performing and most-viewed titles ever on Prime Video.” The company has spent an enormous amount on the series, with some saying it could exceed $1 billion when all is said and done.
The third season will jump forward several years from the events of the last season, taking place at “the height of the War of the Elves and Sauron, as the Dark Lord seeks to craft the One Ring that will give him the edge he needs to win the war, bind all peoples to his will — and at last rule all Middle-earth.” It’s set to premiere on Prime Video on November 11.
The Hunt for Gollum
A new Lord of the Rings movie is also on the way. The Hunt for Gollum is set to be directed by Andy Serkis, who will also reprise his role as Gollum/Smeagol. The rest of the cast includes Ian McKellen as Gandalf the Grey, Lee Pace as Thranduil, and Elijah Wood as Frodo Baggins.
Jamie Dornan will be stepping into the role of Strider, aka Aragorn, chief of the Northern Dúnedain Rangers, and Leo Woodall will play Halvard, another one of the Dúnedain. Kate Winslet will play Marigol, the matriarch of a settlement of Hobbit-like folk.
While some are upset that Viggo Mortensen won’t be returning as Aragorn, Serkis seems very happy with Dornan and even said that Mortensen approves. “I really, really don’t want to go into it right now because I do want to save that for further down the line,” Serkis said on the Happy Sad Confused podcast. “We’re at a crunch stage now, we’re just about to start shooting. We’re not far off shooting. So, I’m going to save all discussion about casting, other than that, we are thrilled that Jamie’s doing it. We’re absolutely thrilled. And, by the way, so is Viggo.“
The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum is currently slated for a December 17, 2027 release.
