At long last, we have a trailer for THE ROAD, John Hillcoat’s adaptation of Cormac McCarthy’s grim and brilliant Pulitzer Prize winning novel, about a man and his son’s quest through a barren hellscape populated by brutal cannibals, black dust, and the dilapidated remains of a society long gone. We also have a date for its release – OCTOBER 16 – although the fact that this movie is still being controlled by The Brothers Weinstein makes me hesitant to mark my calendar just yet. The film has been sitting on their “Now what to do with this f*cking movie..?” shelf for almost a year, and if you know those boys, that shelf is stacked high.
The trailer comes out in perfect conjunction with an interesting article in ESQUIRE proclaiming that it is “the most important film of the year.” The article delivers many gracious compliments upon THE ROAD, with this being a highlight: It is a brilliantly directed adaptation of a beloved novel, a delicate and anachronistically loving look at the immodest and brutish end of us all.
Fascinatingly, it also warns: You won’t want to see this one twice.
