The Smurfs 2 poster and new villains peek reveals what will be the Godfather of all animation films

All right, I smurfed you with that “Godfather” line just to pull you in. However, it’s really just to talk smurf about this Smurfs business and why it continues to exist. Well, the simple answer is; money. THE SMURFS made a lot of smurfing money and thus, we are now going to be subjected to not one, but two mothersmurfing sequels, the first of which, THE SMURFS 2 is heading our way next year. Now, I want you to hold your breath and get ready for probably the most original, thought-provoking, and intense teaser poster you’ve ever seen for a sequel. You ready?

Did you see what they did there? The Smurf is holding up two fingers, signifying a part two! Amazing. Just, smurfing amazing. So, if that’s not enough to get you smurfed for the epic awesomeness, here’s some details on the new villains for the sequel, called “The Naughties,” who are both basically gray smurfs. Vexy (voiced by Christina Ricci) and Hackus (voiced by JB Smoove) are creations of Gargamel (Hank Azaria), much like Smurfette.

“Vexy is smart, and mischievous and has lots of attitude. Attitude to spare,” says director Raja Gosnell . “And she really does want to please her father. Hackus, he’s just very funny and very physical,” Gosnell adds. “He’s the Tasmanian Devil meets a lovable puppy dog.”

Movies like THE SMURFS 2 are painful to me. I know that kids love them (although I’ll take a smurfing bullet before my 3-year old sees any of these…because that means I have to see them, too) and that’s all well and good, but let’s face it, these aren’t top tier animated films. To me, movies like this and ALVIN AND THE CHIPMUNKS are the children’s equivalent of TWILIGHT; a huge dedicated demographic that will help it make buckets of cash, but ultimately equalling some smurfingly bad entertainment.

THE SMURFS 2 is coming, like a smurf outta hell, whether we like it or not, on July 31, 2013.
