Empire recently had the exclusive on a new look at the Street Fighter movie, but the publication also has a new exclusive look at the upcoming Aaron Sorkin drama The Social Reckoning. It’s not a particularly exciting image, but we get a look at stars, Mikey Madison and Jeremy Allen White, as their characters work together building a case on Facebook. The Social Reckoning
The cast includes Jeremy Stron (Succession) as Mark Zuckerberg, Mikey Madison (Anora) as whistleblower Frances Haugen and Jeremy Allen White (The Bear) as Jeff Horowitz, the Wall Street Journal reporter who wrote a series of articles that exposed the troubling revelations about Facebook’s inner workings and global impact. Bill Burr (The Mandalorian) and Wunmi Mosaku (Sinners) will also appear in the movie.
Sorkin, who wrote the original film, will write and direct The Social Reckoning. The official logline reads: “A companion piece to the hit film, The Social Network, Sorkin’s original screenplay tells the true story of how Frances Haugen (Madison), a young Facebook engineer, enlists the help of Jeff Horwitz (White), a Wall Street Journal reporter, to go on a dangerous journey that ends up blowing the whistle on the social network’s most guarded secrets.“
Strong has previously said that he didn’t develop his performance with Jesse Eisenberg’s influence at all. He recently stated, “No, I think that has nothing to do with what I’m going to do.” He would also share his excitement on working with Sorkin again, saying, “It’s one of the great scripts I’ve ever read. It speaks to our time, it touches the third rail of everything happening in our world. It’s a great character — fascinating, complex — and I’m approaching it with great care and empathy and objectivity. I’ve made two films with Aaron [with The Trial of the Chicago 7 and Molly’s Game] and third time’s the charm.“
Eisenberg on not returning
One thing that makes The Social Reckoning unique is that it’s a movie based on a true story that is still a sequel to a movie based on a true story. The continuing controversy around Facebook means that Mark Zuckerberg is predominantly involved, but none of the lead cast will be returning. Jesse Eisenberg, who previously played Zuckerberg, explained why he chose not to return to the role. He recalled what he told Sorkin, “I just told him I’m moving in different directions in my life, and you know, what he said sums it up nicely. I don’t want to be associated with that character, but all of my reasons for not wanting to do the movie have nothing to do with how wonderful the movie is, and will be, and I’m sure is already.”
The Social Reckoning will hit theaters on October 9, 2026.
