The Strangers 3 being directed by Elm Street 4 and Deep Blue Sea director Renny Harlin?

Yesterday, our friends at Bloody Disgusting shared a quote from The Strangers producer Roy Lee that seemed to indicate there’s a trilogy of Strangers sequels in the works: “I think the next three are in production next month with another filmmaker that people will know.” So they went digging to find out who this known filmmaker might be… and now they’re reporting that “Renny Harlin is on board to direct one if not all three brand new upcoming sequels in The Strangers franchise!

Harlin has directed some really cool movies over the course of his career. Prison, A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master, Die Hard 2, The Adventures of Ford Fairlane, Cliffhanger, The Long Kiss Goodnight, Deep Blue Sea, Mindhunters. He has also made movies like Exorcist: The Beginning and The Covenant, but regardless – I count it as exciting news that he’s taking the helm of The Strangers 3. Or possibly 4 or 5. Or all three? I’m still shocked that we’re apparently going to be getting three Strangers sequels at once instead of just one at a time.

Directed by Bryan Bertino, The Strangers was released in 2008 and had the following synopsis:

Kristen and James are expecting a relaxing weekend at a family vacation home, but their stay turns out to be anything but peaceful. First, a mysterious and dangerous woman arrives at the door while James is out on an errand. When he returns, he accidentally kills his friend Mike, mistaking him for an intruder. And then real danger does show up — in the form of three masked torturers, leaving Kristen and James struggling for survival.

Directed by Johannes Roberts, The Strangers: Prey at Night didn’t come along until 2018. That one told the following story:

Mike and his wife Cindy take their son and daughter on a road trip that becomes their worst nightmare. The family members soon find themselves in a desperate fight for survival when they arrive at a secluded mobile home park that’s mysteriously deserted — until three masked psychopaths show up to satisfy their thirst for blood.

I have fallen behind on Renny Harlin movies, I haven’t seen anything he has directed in recent years, but here’s hoping he can make a Strangers sequel that’s as entertaining as his Elm Street sequel was.

What do you think of the idea that Renny Harlin could be directing a sequel (or two or three) to The Strangers? Share your thoughts on this one by leaving a comment below.
