The Super Mario Bros. Movie expected to conquer the Mushroom Kingdom with an $85M-$90M 5-Day opening

The Super Mario Bros. Movie, box office, Nintendo

The box office is about to feel the power of a Super Mushroom when The Super Mario Bros. Movie butt stomps into cinemas. According to Deadline, Illumination/Universal/Nintendo’s Mario movie is advancing toward an $85M-$90M Easter holiday weekend opening. The 5-day opening tracks the film for Wednesday through Sunday, casting a wide net to add as many golden coins to its purse as possible. I’ll tell you this, though. I would not be surprised if The Super Mario Bros. Movie makes over $90M during the 5-day window. Like, way more.

Fan responses to The Super Mario Bros. Movie trailers have been outstanding, with many planning to rush to theaters as soon as it opens. I plan to see the movie immediately, preferably at a late-night screening to avoid a kid-dominated crowd. Speaking of the kiddos, The Super Mario Bros. Movie is tracking well with boys and girls under 12 equally. The film also plays well with the gamer crowd and men under 25. The trailers suggest Mario’s mission is to rescue Luigi, not Peach. This plot twist gives Princess Peach a chance to strut her stuff and give us some of the best on-screen umbrella combat since Kingsman: The Secret Service.

Directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic (collaborators on Teen Titans Go!Teen Titans Go! To the Movies) from a screenplay by Matthew Fogel (The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part, Minions: The Rise of Gru), the film stars Chris Pratt as Mario, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong, Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong, Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek and Sebastian Maniscalco as Spike.

While the world waits with bated breath for The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Nintendo is munching on Super Mushrooms and growing its brand in the film industry. Nintendo acquired Dynamo Pictures in July of 2022 to establish a CG animation company, Nintendo Pictures. The studio plans to adapt more of Nintendo’s IPs. Nintendo has yet to reveal what properties the studio intends to adopt.

If you’re unfamiliar with Dynamo Pictures, they’ve worked on projects like Ghost in the Shell, Studio Ghibli’s Earwig and the WitchNier Replicant, Mega Man, Death Stranding, and titles in the Resident Evil franchise. While Nintendo has yet to reveal any potential plans for the studio, fans may eventually see adaptations of The Legend of ZeldaMetroidAnimal Crossing, or Luigi’s Mansion.

Are you excited about The Super Mario Bros. Movie coming to theaters on Wednesday, April 5, 2023? Will the movie starring (arguably) the most iconic characters in gaming make more than $90M during the 5-day holiday window? Let us know what you think in the comments below.
