The Turning director Floria Sigismondi is plotting another thriller

Last Updated on July 30, 2021

Director Floria Sigismondi is best known for her work in the realm of music videos, where she worked with the likes of Marilyn Manson, David Bowie, Jimmy Page, Robert Plant, Leonard Cohen, Muse, Fiona Apple, The White Stripes, The Cure, Rihanna, Justin Timberlake, and Katy Perry, among others. In 2010 she made her feature directorial debut with the well-received music biopic THE RUNAWAYS, and after directing episodes of Hemlock Grove, Daredevil, The Handmaid's Tale, and American Gods over the last decade she has returned to the feature world with the psychological horror film THE TURNING, which is in theatres now.

It doesn't look like Sigismondi's first horror movie is going to blow many viewers away – our own JimmyO said that THE TURNING is "rushed and chaotic without being interesting" and gave it a 4/10 review. But the director seems to like working in the genre, as she's planning to make another horror movie as her third feature.

Speaking with Bloody Disgusting's Boo Crew Podcast, Sigismondi said that she's working on an independent feature that she'll be ready to talk about very soon.

Yeah, [it’s horror]. It’s psychological… thriller."

Here's hoping that Sigismondi's next contribution to the horror genre will be something that JimmyO will be able to rate higher than 4/10… and I also hope that there won't be another ten year gap between Sigismondi movies like there was between THE RUNAWAYS and THE TURNING.

Written by Jade Bartlett, Chad Hayes, and Carey Hayes, THE TURNING is "a loose adaptation" of the Henry James novella The Turn of the Screw, which also famously served as the inspiration for the 1961 film THE INNOCENTS. The story is set in

a mysterious estate in the Maine countryside, where newly appointed nanny Kate is charged with the care of two disturbed orphans, Flora and Miles. Quickly though, she discovers that both the children and the house are harboring dark secrets and things may not be as they appear.

THE TURNING stars Mackenzie Davis, Finn Wolfhard, Joely Richardson, and Brooklyn Prince. The film was produced by Roy Lee and Scott Bernstein.
