Back in September of 2020, AMC announced that once The Walking Dead wraps up its eleventh and final season, it would be followed by a spin-off that would center on the characters Carol (Melissa McBride) and Daryl (Norman Reedus). But earlier this year, we heard that Daryl will actually be going solo on this show. Carol had to be written out because the show is set in Europe and McBride couldn’t relocate to Europe for the production. Now Scott M. Gimple, the Chief Content Officer of AMC’s Walking Dead Universe, has confirmed exactly where the Daryl series takes place: Daryl is going to France!

Some viewers may remember that the two-season series The Walking Dead: World Beyond ended with an epilogue scene that took place in France and referenced “variant” zombies that are stronger and faster than usual. Gimple said that epilogue is connected to what we’ll see in the Daryl spin-off.

Here’s Gimple’s quote, courtesy of ComicBook.com:

The Daryl spin-off takes place in France. (The World Beyond epilogue) is a bit of a tease of some of the things Daryl is going to face. Daryl is a fish out of water to start with. If Daryl finds himself with new people, he’s a fish out of water. In France, in a country that’s going through the apocalypse, [it’s] an entirely different thing. He finds himself having to reinvent himself again, having to find himself again, and also, not being with — probably — the only people in the world he’s comfortable with.”

Angela Kang, who served as showrunner on seasons 9, 10, and 11, was going to do the same on the Daryl spin-off, but decided to hand the show over to longtime ER showrunner David Zabel, a newcomer to the Walking Dead franchise, so she can focus on other projects. In addition to being showrunner on ER, Zabel co-created the PBS series Mercy Street with Lisa Q. Wolfinger. His other writing and producing credits include Dark AngelStar Trek: VoyagerDetroit 187Red Band Society, and Lucky 7.

I never expected to see Daryl go to France, but the show could be interesting. I’ll be giving it a chance. Will you be watching the Daryl spin-off? Let us know by leaving a comment below.
