Andrew Lincoln‘s character Rick Grimes rode out of the AMC series The Walking Dead on a helicopter in season 9 – and for a while, the plan was that we’d see the character again in a trilogy of feature films. The plan has since changed to a mini-series that will reunite Rick with his love Michonne, played by Danai Gurira. The mini-series (which is expected to premiere sometime in 2024) was filmed under the working title The Walking Dead: Summit, but for quite a while we’ve been fairly certain that it’s going to be called The Walking Dead: Rick & Michonne. That title has now been confirmed, as AMC+ has launched a landing page for the show, complete with a logo – which can be seen at the bottom of this article.

Gurira co-created the Rick & Michonne mini-series and is working on the show as a writer. Consisting of six episodes, the show will present an “epic love story of two characters changed by a changed world. Kept apart by distance. By an unstoppable power. By the ghosts of who they were. Rick and Michonne are thrown into another world, built on a war against the dead… And ultimately, a war against the living. Can they find each other and who they were in a place and situation unlike any they’ve ever known before? Are they enemies? Lovers? Victims? Victors? Without each other, are they even alive — or will they find that they, too, are the Walking Dead?

Gurira is working on the Rick & Michonne mini-series with Scott M. Gimple, Chief Content Officer of the Walking Dead Universe. Self spoke with Gimple about their collaboration, and he told them, “She challenges me, I challenge her, and neither one of us lets the other off the hook. In life, I’m more a character actor; Danai is a lead. When we’re working, when we’re pitching, when we’re just dealing with life stuff—it’s a good combo.” Describing Gurira as “incredibly creatively ambitious,” Gimple added, “[Danai] wants to do new, signature work—stuff that isn’t out there currently. She doesn’t want to settle in any way. It’s the best creative energy to be around.”

The Walking Dead: Rick & Michonne was filmed in New Jersey. Lincoln and Gurira are joined in the cast by Lesley-Ann Brandt (Lucifer), who plays a character named Pearl Thorne.
