The Whale: New trailer gives us a little taste of Brendan Fraser’s heart-wrenching performance

Last Updated on November 9, 2022

Up until now, the only thing we’ve seen from the immensely praised film, The Whale, is a single screenshot and footage of Brendan Fraser receiving standing ovations from audiences at festival screenings of the drama. At long last, A24 gives us a look at what’s to come from the star as he mounts a huge comeback. The trailer for The Whale has finally made its way online, and audiences can now get a taste of Fraser’s performance.

The short synopsis from A24 reads,

“From Darren Aronofsky comes The Whale, the story of a reclusive English teacher who attempts to reconnect with his estranged teenage daughter. Starring Brendan Fraser and based on the acclaimed play by Samuel D. Hunter.”

While the synopsis doesn’t offer much in terms of plot, the film is based on a play that takes place primarily in one setting.

Fraser seems rightly proud of his performance as he feels he can never reach these heights (or depths) again, telling Newsweek, “It’s gonna be like something you haven’t seen before. That’s really all I can tell you…The wardrobe and costume was extensive, seamless, cumbersome. This is certainly far removed from anything I’ve ever done but not to be coy…I do know it’s going to make a lasting impression.”

Even before the film screened, there had been rumblings of Oscar talk for Fraser, but as the film finally reaches audiences, the talk has intensified. Fraser had been receiving multiple standing ovations for his performance alone, which had moved the actor to tears each time, and he is now basking in the light of his career reincarnation.
