Tim Burton dumps Maleficent, Harry Potter’s David Yates may direct instead

Despite the massive success he delivered for Disney with ALICE IN WONDERLAND, Tim Burton has passed on bringing MALEFICENT to the big-screen. As you may recall, he was long but loosely attached to direct the film, which also had, and still has, the lovely Angie Jolie (below) attached to play the titular lead.

So where does MALEFICENT go from here?

Word from THR has David Yates (HARRY POTTER 5-7) possibly in line to replace Burton. You see, Disney is not intent on shelving MALEFICENT, so it’ll behoove everyone involved to assign a director as soon as possible. Yates is a proven commodity in the film biz, currently poised to see his franchise finale do financial gangbusters at the box-office this summer.

Written by Linda Woolverton (ALICE IN WONDERLAND, THE LION KING), MALEFICENT is Disney’s live-action take on Sleeping Beauty, telling the fairy tale from the point of view of the evil witch who threatened to kill the princess.
