Nice! Tim Robbins defends “charming” Howard the Duck

Last Updated on July 30, 2021

I'm not really sure if we should be covering HOWARD THE DUCK here on AITH, but considering the movie gave me loads of nightmares as a kid, my votes lean towards "fair enough." And speaking of the strange-ass motion picture, today we have word that the original film's star Tim Robbins (THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION) is still out and about defending the flick.

Robbins says:

To be honest, I think there’s a lot of charming things about that film. George Lucas had just done Star Wars, it was a lot of money, it was on location and I think it was the first film that the Marvel Universe did. So on paper, it felt really great!

For those that might be unaware, the synopsis for the film goes a little something like this:

Howard the Duck is suddenly beamed from Duckworld, a planet of intelligent ducks with arms and legs, to Earth, where he lands in Cleveland. There he saves rocker Beverly (Lea Thompson) from thugs and forms a friendship with her. She introduces him to Phil (Tim Robbins), who works at a lab with scientist Dr. Jenning (Jeffrey Jones). When the doctor attempts to return Howard to his world, Jenning instead transfers an evil spirit into his own body.

HOWARD THE DUCK was directed by Willard Huyck (BEST DEFENCE) from a screenplay he co-wrote along with producer Gloria Katz (INDIANA JONES AND THE TEMPLE OF DOOM) based on the Marvel character created by Steve Gerber. This movie starred Lea Thompson (BACK TO THE FUTURE, JAWS 3-D), Jeffrey Jones (BEETLEJUICE, SLEEPY HOLLOW), and Tim Robbins (THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION).
