Back in October we told you that Tom Cruise was being eyed for the trippy sci-fi Doug Liman joint ALL YOU NEED IS KILL (which was temporarily going by the not-much-better title WE ARE MORTALS). His was just the latest name to be mentioned in conjunction with the film; Hollywood players including Ryan Gosling, Joseph Gordon Levitt and Brad Pitt had evidently flirted with the project, but seemed like schedule conflicts prevented any progress.
The “talk” phase is apparently over, and Cruise is now officially on board the movie. The role was originally meant for a younger actor, but it’s now being rewritten to fit Cruise’s age.
Based on the 2004 Japanese novel by Hiroshi Sakurazaka, the story is told from the first person point of view of the protagonist Keiji Kiriya. Keiji is a new recruit in the United Defense Force, fighting against the mysterious creatures called ‘Mimics’ which have laid siege to Earth. Keiji is killed on his first sortie, but through some inexplicable phenomenon wakes up having returned to the day before the battle, only to find himself caught in a time loop as his death and resurrection repeats time and time again. Keiji’s skills as a soldier grows as he passes through the time loops trying to change his fate.
Cruise will being doing some sci-fi epic double-duty: Before he shoots ALL YOU NEED IS KILL, he’ll fly out to the outer reaches for Joseph Kosinski’s HORIZONS. Hey, we already knew the guy’s head was well above the clouds…
Cruise’s HORIZONS co-star Jessica Chastain
