IMF Agent Ethan Hunt is set to get back in action as Tom Cruise has inked a deal to reprise his franchise role, following on the heels of the last film, MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – GHOST PROTOCOL, the most successful film of his career with a $700 million worldwide take.

From Deadline:

Paramount Pictures and Skydance Productions have set Tom Cruise in a deal to star in and produce a fifth installment in the Mission: Impossible franchise. Both Paramount and Skydance have confirmed this, but they are not saying who’s writing and directing, or when they are targeting release.

It has long been speculated that Christopher McQuarrie would direct the 5th installment, with the writer/director recently saying he was "deciding" if he would direct it or not. Deadline says that a deal for a writer/director, be it McQuarrie or someone else, is expected to be "finalized shortly," and development will begin with Cruise and J.J. Abrams' Bad Robot.

Cruise has been in overdrive of late, jumping into one high profile projects after the next. Both JACK REACHER and OBLIVION have been solid hits, with REACHER in early talks for a sequel. The prolific actor has wrapped the sci-fi actioner ALL YOU NEED IS KILL for director Doug Liman and recently signed on to star in Guy Ritchie's adaptation of THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E. with Armie Hammer and is still attached to a new version of VAN HELSING for Universal.

I'm an unabashed Cruise fan and couldn't be happier with the slate of films he has on the way, especially another entry in the MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE franchise, which has gotten better and better with the last two entries. The hardest working actor in Hollywood continues to prove his mettle.

No word on a release date for the 5th film just yet, but we'll update as the info comes in. Stay tuned.
