The Arrow dropped some fresh news on ya’ll about PAIN KILLER’s premiere at SITGES ’06 that you can read all about right here. Now while it would seem like that is all the news you should need to hit up the festival, it’s probably worth noting that Guillermo del Toro will also be there with

del Toro’s presence will be for a Special Focus session on his impressive filmography which promises to be a serious highlight for any genre fan. They’ll also throw David Lynch some love with a celebration of the 20th Annviersary of BLUE VELVET’s premiere at the festival. Supporting that will be the Spanish premiere of Lynch’s INLAND EMPIRE.

Now SITGES is about much more than pomp and circumstance, too. The main reason for it is the flicks, and the variety of catagories available is exhaustive and awesome as always. Here’s a taste of what you can expect:

Europeangenre movies: Classic and new filmmakers demonstrate that the fantasy genre has solidly established itself and is enjoying great prestige, with titles like The Science of Sleep, by Michael Gondry, 13 (Tzameti), by Gela Babluani or Taxidermia, by György Pálfi.

OrientalFilm: Sitges 06 will once again highlight the importance of the genre from the East, including films in the official selection as well as dedicating a whole category to it with Orient Express. The Host, by Bon Joon-hogong or Time, by Kim Ki-Duk will be competing in Fantàstic.

Animation: With an increasingly greater presence at international competitions, animation has, in addition to its prominence in the Anima’t category, a specific role in the official selection, with films like Princess, by Anders Morgentahler or Renaissance, by Christian Volckman.

NationalFilms: Once again this competition will include eagerly awaited works by national filmmakers like Los Abandonados, by Nacho Cerdá; La hora Fría, by Elio Quiroga and the co-production The Ungodly, with the participation of Catalan producer Jordi Rediu.

Fantasy genre for television: Given the quality of these productions, the fantasy genre transcends screening mediums with important proposals for cinema, television, computer, game consoles, cell phones and multimedia devices. Two of the films from the collection Masters of Horror: Homecoming, by Joe Dante and Cigarette Burns by John Carpenter will be participating in the official selection.

Now keep in mind this is just a taste of the Official Selections. The out of competition offerings have all sorts of tasty goodness as well so head on over to the Festival Site to see all of what’s going on!
