Writer/director Ryan Spindell's anthology THE MORTUARY COLLECTION will be making its premiere at Fantastic Fest this Saturday, September 21st, at 11:30pm, with a second screening to follow at 11:30pm on Tuesday the 24th. In anticipation of these screenings, a teaser trailer has been released online and can be seen below.
THE MORTUARY COLLECTION is said to have a "vibrant variety of tones and timely themes", with stories that balance "humor, terror, and squirm-inducing moments". The press release also promises that the film has the ability to pull the rug out from under the viewer.
One of the most appealing aspects of the film to me is the fact that it's hosted by a character played by the great Clancy Brown. Here's the set-up:
When a young girl attends a funeral in an old mortuary, she stumbles upon a secret room full of curiosities where she meets the towering, ominous mortician. He guides her through his collection, sharing four stories of wild, unique, and memorable deaths. Thus begins the narrative skeleton surrounding this delightful, morbid, and clever anthology.
Brown is joined in the cast by Caitlin Fisher, Christine Kilmer, Jacob Elordi, Ema Horvath, Jennifer Irwin, James Bachman, Barak Hardley, Sarah Hay, Ben Heathcoat, and Mike C. Nelson.
Boosting my interest in this film even further is the news that the stories all take place in a different decade. Each one "brings us into a fully realized, impeccably designed period piece, moving chronologically from the 1950s through the 1980s."
A ‘50s housewife struggles with a mysterious presence in her bathroom; a ‘60s college boy gets a taste of his own fraternizing medicine; and a ‘70s husband makes some tough decisions about his wife — all culminating in the ‘80s-set The Babysitter Murders.
"The Babysitter Murders" was also the working title for the original HALLOWEEN, so that's the segment I'm most looking forward to seeing.
I won't be at Fantastic Fest, but I do want to see THE MORTUARY COLLECTION when it's released into the world. Hopefully we won't have to wait long to hear some distribution news.
