Trailer: Netflix series Daybreak has Matthew Broderick and zombies

Daybreak

I never thought I'd see Matthew Broderick deal with a zombie scenario, and even though he's in Netflix's upcoming "high school apocalypse dramedy" series Daybreak, which features zombies the characters refer to as "ghoulies", I still don't think we're going to be seeing Broderick doing much zombie fighting. In the new trailer embedded below we're told that adults turn into ghoulies, so it's not looking good for Broderick.

The show itself looks pretty good, though. Based on a graphic novel by Brian Ralph, Daybreak centers on

17-year-old high school outcast Josh who is searching for his missing girlfriend Sam in post-apocalyptic Glendale, CA. Joined by a ragtag group of misfits including a pyromaniac 12-year-old Angelica and Josh’s former high school bully Wesley, now turned pacifist samurai, Josh tries to stay alive amongst the horde of Mad Max-style gangs (evil jocks, cheerleaders turned Amazon warriors), zombie-like creatures called Ghoulies, and everything else this brave new world throws at him.

The Mad Max influence is quite clear in the trailer, and there's also a bit of samurai sword action in there. A good portion of this is set to a version of the song "I Melt with You", which I strongly associate with the 1983 film VALLEY GIRL. Broderick, VALLEY GIRL vibes, Mad Max, samurai swords, zombies / ghoulies… This all mixes together to make Daybreak look entertaining to me.

We'll find out how entertaining it is when the show reaches the Netflix streaming service on October 24th.
