Tron 3 could still happen as Jared Leto offers a promising update for fans

It’s been more than five years since Jared Leto (Morbius, House of Gucci) began teasing the possibility of a Tron 3. However, the time has come to crank the rumor mill back into action with a promising update. Whispers of a Tron 3 began in 2017 when Leto said that he could star in a Tron reboot, which was later revealed to be more of a sequel than a reset for the franchise. The project remained little more than an idea up until 2020 when Disney blew the dust off the project and put it back into development. With talk of Tron 3 back in the mix, Garth Davis (Lion, Foe) was named as the film’s director. According to a since-deleted tweet from Leto, the film was titled Tron: Ares, but it never came to pass. Talk of a Tron sequel grew quiet shortly thereafter, which brings us to today with Leto saying that there’s still hope.

While talking with the fine folks over at Screenrant about his upcoming film Morbius, Leto offered an update about there being some movement for the Tron franchise:

“I’m a super fan of Tron, and we are working hard on Tron with our incredible partners at Disney. Just an amazing group of creative people. We’re getting closer. We’re getting closer and closer, and who knows? Something may be [coming] sooner than later.“

With Davis attached to direct, Leto lined up to star, and a script by Jesse Wigutow (It Runs in the Family), is it possible that Disney is finally ready to revisit the well for another Tron movie? We’ll have to wait and see as Disney still hasn’t given the project an official green light.

Disney revived its Tron franchise in 2010, with Garrett Hedlund, Olivia Wilde, and a returning Jeff Bridges once again traversing The Grid for a technologically-charged adventure. Tron: Legacy earned $400 million at the worldwide box office, even though the film was plagued with mixed reviews from critics and fans alike. In addition to the film, the characters Sam Flynn and Quorra were included as playable characters in the toys-to-life video game Disney Infinity. Unfortunately, Tron: Legacy didn’t drum up enough interest in the property to begin work on Tron 3, and the franchise has remained dormant ever since.
