True Detective season 4 will star Jodie Foster

True Detective, season 4, Jodie Foster

After more than three years away, HBO will be bringing True Detective back to our screens, and they’ve just tapped a major star to lead the new season. It was announced today that Jodie Foster will be executive producing and starring in True Detective season 4.

Jodie Foster will play Detective Liz Danvers in True Detective season 4, which is titled True Detective: Night Country. “When the long winter night falls in Ennis, Alaska, the six men that operate the Tsalal Arctic Research Station vanish without a trace,” reads the official description. “To solve the case, Detectives Liz Danvers and Evangeline Navarro will have to confront the darkness they carry in themselves, and dig into the haunted truths that lie buried under the eternal ice.” Although Jodie Foster made plenty of appearances on television in her younger years, this will mark her first major TV role as an adult.

Original creator Nic Pizzolatto will be back as the network has tapped Issa López (Tigers Are Not Afraid) and Alan Page Arriaga (Shining Girls) with writing the script for True Detective season 4 with Barry Jenkins (Moonlight) on board to executive produce. Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson are also expected to return as executive producers, as will Nic Pizzolatto, although he’s not expected to be creatively involved.

Nic Pizzolatto and HBO partied ways after the third season of the series, but HBO kept the door open to bring it back with a new creative team. HBO’s Casey Bloys hinted at a fourth season of the anthology series earlier this year. “It’s safe to say we’re working with a couple of writers to find the right tone and take,” Bloys said. “It’s definitely an area that could be very interesting and I think it would be interesting with a new voice. Quality is what’s going to guide us so if we end up with scripts that we don’t feel are representative or are not at a high enough quality, we’re not going to do something just to do it.” The first season of True Detective starred Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson and remains one of my favourite seasons of television. The second season brought Colin Farrell, Rachel McAdams, Taylor Kitsch, Kelly Reilly, and Vince Vaughn onboard, but received mixed reviews compared to the first. The third season fared better with a story revolving around Mahershala Ali, Carmen Ejogo, Stephen Dorff, Scoot McNairy, and Ray Fisher.
