Is Nicolas Cage still going to star in True Detective season 5?

True Detective fans got excited when it was revealed last year that Nicolas Cage was in talks to star in the latest season of HBO’s anthology series, but we haven’t heard much since. So, is Cage still involved?

While chatting with Variety, the Spider-Noir star was asked if the fifth season was still happening and if he would be starring.

I have no idea. I think they’re working on the material, but I haven’t heard about it in quite some time,” he explained. “I’m not signed on to anything; we’re just talking. I like Issa López a lot, and would be thrilled to work with her, but nothing is concrete. And I’ve never seen the first season of “True Detective,” but I’ve heard great things.

Issa López, the showrunner/writer/director of True Detective: Night Country, is returning for the fifth season. Details are sparse, but HBO’s Head of Drama Series and Film, Francesca Orsi, said the new season will be “set in New York, in Jamaica Bay. Issa has a lot to say, not unlike she did with Night Country. It’s a different milieu but just as powerful.” Cage is said to be playing Henry Logan, a New York detective tackling the mystery at the heart of the new season.

Cage Didn’t Want to do Television

Spider-Noir is Cage’s first time starring in a TV series, and that’s because he resisted acting on the small screen for nearly his entire career.

I was adamant about not doing television, because I didn’t want to do anything that was too homogenized or that was like everybody else. And my son sat me down during COVID, and he showed me ‘Breaking Bad.’ I began to see that the actors in that show were afforded the luxury of time to tell their story,” he said. “I saw Bryan Cranston staring at a suitcase for what seemed like minutes. I couldn’t take my eyes off him, and all he was doing was staring at a suitcase, and it occurred to me that you can’t do that in movies: You don’t have the time. I thought, maybe with an eight-hour narrative I can start planting seeds for a character that can bloom into something that I don’t have the luxury of time to do in a movie. That was the main attraction.

What We Thought of Spider-Noir

All eight episodes of Spider-Noir are now streaming on Prime Video (in both Authentic Black & White and True-Hue Full Colour), and our own Alex Maidy was a big fan.

Spider-Noir is a fantastic gateway for audiences unfamiliar with film noir, allowing them to explore the classic genre. The series also serves as the single best project from Sony’s Spider-Man Universe that does not feature Tom Holland,” he wrote. “Nicolas Cage has rarely been better as this character, allowing him to channel his well-known love of cinema and comic books, as well as his quirky approach to inhabiting his roles.Spider-Noir is a spectacular love letter to a bygone era and the best superhero series in a very long time. Watch it in either presentation, and you will find a lot to appreciate from the music and mood to the costumes and special effects. Who would have thought this would end up being one of the best Spider-Man projects ever? I hope we get more seasons that continue to expand on this specific slice of the multiverse.” You can check out the rest of his review right here.
