The directors of the terrific TURBO KID – François Simard, Anouk Whissell and Yoann-Karl Whissell – are finally making a new film together, and it sounds rather straight-forward… for them, anyway.

Their latest is SUMMER OF '84, a title that already fills me with Amblin-esque visions and musings. The plot:

The horror-thriller is set in 1984 and centers on 15-year-old neighborhood conspiracy theorist Davey Armstrong who suspects his police officer neighbor might be the serial killer all over the local news. He and his three best friends begin an investigation that soon puts them in danger.

So maybe a bit COP CAR, maybe a bit DISTURBIA… but with that TURBO KID twist! (Speaking of, where's that TURBO KID sequel we heard about last year?)

Production is supposed to begin in July and an end-of-the-year release is planned (which seems like a very tight window, but I'll believe Screen Daily for now).

Gunpowder and Sky, the company currently releasing HOUNDS OF LOVE, is producing. The script was written by Matt Leslie and Stephen J. Smith.

“How could we not bet on a writer associated with Straight Outta Compton and the directors of Turbo Kid to tell a twisted tale about a peaceful community where a serial killer threatens to shatter the suburban dream,” Van Toffler, CEO and co-founder of Gunpowder & Sky, said.

How could you not indeed!

The directors, known collectively as RKSS, said: “We were passionate about Summer Of ’84 since the very first pitch. Our team fell in love with the script and felt like it was written just for us. There was no doubt in our mind that we needed to get attached to this amazing project and work with the talented writers who imagined it all.”
