Well folks it’s getting pretty cold outside and Winter is a few weeks away.. so you know what that means, right? Sundance 2011! Yeah baby! Arguably the year’s biggest film festival is getting ready to kick things off January 20th and today we’ve got the first two genre flicks to make the prestigious fest.

So what could those two films be? Well by the subject of this article I think it’s safe to assume they’re VAMPIRE and RED STATE!

Now RED STATE is of course the political horror flick heading our way from comedy director Kevin Smith. Smith recently let loose the news that RED STATE would be hitting Sundance during his Plus One podcast. Natch. The flick sports a cast that includes Kyle Gallner, Melissa Leo, Haley Ramm, Michael Angarano, Stephen Root, John Goodman and Kevin Pollak.

A horror film in which a group of misfits encounter fundamentalism gone to the extreme in Middle America.

As far as VAMPIRE goes, the last time we heard anything regarding this project was way back in May. May! That’s seven months ago! Well damn… It’s about time we’ve got an update on this thing.

VAMPIRE comes from director Iwai Shunji and will actually be a part of Sundance’s World Cinema Dramatic competition. It sports an interesting cast that includes Kevin Zegers, Keisha Castle-Hughes, Rachael Leigh Cook (below), Kristin Kreuk, Adelaide Clemens, Trevor Morgan, Amanda Plummer, and Yu Aoi. I’ve gone ahead and tossed up a still from the flick below. Enjoy.

A schoolteacher with a taste for human blood searches for suicidal young women as his victims, all of whom he falls in love with before their deaths.

So there you have it folks. A couple solid first entries to get us stoked for Sundance 2011. Like you weren’t going to be excited anyway… Be sure to keep it here as we await more genre news from Sundance!
