There was word a few days ago that Universal wanted to bring director Justin Lin back to helm whatever sequels followed FURIOUS 7. At that time it was referred to as a "multi-part film" although thanks to a recent roundtable discussion with several studio heads, Universal Pictures chairman Donna Langley let slip that the number of movies they're looking at now is three. Whether or not the three films would contain one giant arc or proceed as stand-alone entries is uncertain, but it's possible they may not stop there.
Donna Langley on whether or not the series survives without Paul Walker:
I believe it does. We think there's at least three more. Paul is, and always will be, an integral part of the story. But there are many other great characters, and it's also an opportunity to introduce new characters. I think it's still a growing franchise. We'll see what happens with Furious 7, obviously, but our box office has grown over the past three or four films and internationally, in particular. So we think that there's more to mine there. But we're of course very mindful about fatigue.
While most fans have to worry about long-running franchises going too over-the-top, that's exactly what launched this franchise into the stratosphere of popcorn flicks. I'm not saying Paul Walker wasn't a great fit, but as long as they can keep the talent coming in and the action well-shot, this series could be what THE EXPENDABLES series has been trying to pull off for three films now. Three more Fast and Furious films? As long as they deliver, why stop there?
